Congrats to the Music Festival, it's hard work, and thanks to Mr. Boyne and TVJ for promoting it! However since there is no OAR (Office of Arts Regulations) here, I would like to make some clarifying comments as a musician, who came to Jamaica from 'foreign' over 25 years ago: To talk about the top ten pianists in the world is rather courageous, to say the least! Without mentioning the dozens of fantastic pianists coming out of Asia every week, one has to pay respect to those distinguished players such as Martha Argerich, Mitzuko Uchida, my fellow Austrian Alfred Brendel, and not to forget Jamaica's own Don Shirley, Maxine Franklin, Nigel Coxe, and Dr. Paul Shaw. Paul for example studied all Sonatas by Mozart for the commemoration of the 2006 Mozart Year, and performed them internationally in 3 consecutive evenings. The piano is difficult, yes, but so is the French Horn or the Oboe; and in my opinion singing opera demands the ultimate task of performing flawlessly and acting. Jamaica's own Willard White has received the CBE and the knighthood not without years of impressive musical delivery all over the globe! To talk about J.S.Bach and his interpreters is somehow sacred. I sat at the feet of the great Gustav Leonhardt, when he mesmerized us for an hour talking alone about the theme of Bach's Goldberg Variations; and at the concert some hours later, every nuance he mentioned could be heard in his playing! Talk about Grammy - after dozens of fantastic recordings, Jamaica's Monty Alexander has been nominated at last! Yes we all wish to be winners - winners of the audiences' appreciation, which relies a great deal on the humility and responsibility to be a true ambassador of the arts...P.S.: Why was the chance not recognized to sensitize the country to make the restoration of the Ward Theatre a priority, at it's centennial celebration year, where thanks to the Japanese Government a beautiful Yamaha Concert Grand is waiting to be played on?
